Greene County has faced a series of tax increases over the last several years in property taxes and the wheel tax. I am in favor of keeping taxes as low and fair as possible.
I also favor allowing the voters of Greene County to have say in any tax increases.
Elected officials must always remember that tax money is not the government's money. That money is the taxpayers' money entrusted to the government. The government should never take more than is necessary.
The Greene County Commission has wrestled with the budget over the last several years, cutting fat from the budget and even making painful cuts. When it comes to spending, I will make every single decision based on two simple truths:
1) Taxpayer money is not my money
2) We must make sure every dollar we spend gets as much out of it as we can possibly get.
Greene County has received some welcomed news over the past couple of years as we have seen businesses located and expand here. I want to do all I can to help Greene County get even better paying jobs to locate here and see existing companies expand.
Greene County has passed budgets that require tax increases and a dip into savings. I believe we should prioritize spending, and I believe we should spend only on what is necessary for the proper functions of local government. I do not believe we should pass budgets that are not funded.
The Greene County Commission seat that I sit in is not my own. It belongs to the taxpayers of Greene County. I encourage all Greene County citizens to come and experience the meetings. If any resident of Greene County wishes to speak, I will be more than happy to call on them. That does not mean I will agree with their position, nor does it mean I will vote the way they request. I will always strive to be civil and give them the opportunity to speak their minds as they deserve.
A Michigan Congressman, Justin Amash, has become well known in the political world for being principled and for being very open when it comes to his votes. He publicizes what the vote is, how he is going to vote or voted, and his rationale behind his vote. I am doing the same.
